Karen & David welcome you to Woodpeckers

Moving in date: 9th August 2005.

After 8 years in Birmingham, we have finally found our beautiful place in the countryside. Woodpeckers is nestled in the landscape between Lichfield and Burton on Trent. It was built in 1952 in the 3000 acre Wychnor Park estate for the then land agent. It has stunning views over the countryside towards Lichfield – the spires of the cathedral can just about be made out on a clear day. Set in just over an acre of land (lots of lawn to mow!), it has an orchard and a copse with some very old very big trees – huge oak trees amongst them.

The name comes from the birds, which apparently come back to the same place every year.

23 August 2005: Our first sighting! Say hello to Mr Woodpecker:

He looks to us like a juvenile green woodpecker.

Another sighting on the 17 September (the same one, but a bit older?):

Expect to see more views of the place over the coming months as we get to know it more.

Here are a few pictures, some from earlier this year (late March), and some just after the move:

View from the front driveway (left), and our nearest neighbour over the wheat field (right).

Views of the ‘dingly dell’ (left) and the orchard (right), with daffodils in bloom.

Views around the place of the surrounding countryside.

Directions:

First get to the A38. From the south, you can come via Birmingham, following the A38 north all the way, or from the M40 take the left lane on to the M42 and then at junction 9 take the A446, which joins the A38 after about 5 miles.

From the north, get off the M1 at junction 24A on to the A50 (to Derby). Carry along the A50 for about 12 miles and then get on the A38, heading south towards Burton on Trent, which you go past.

On the A38, take the exit to Barton under Needwood (B5016).  Woodhouses is about 3 miles along this road.  Shortly after the sign for Woodhouses, take a left turning on to a private road in front of a row of red brick cottages. If you end up in Yoxall first, you have gone about a mile too far. Along the private road, go past the farm on your left, over two cattle grids, and Woodpeckers is on your right about 300 metres along, partly hidden behind the trees and the landscape.
